2022 IN PROGRESS | DIGITAL COLLAGE SERIES ON HYPER-CONSUMERISM
Late one evening when I was in a particularly gloomy headspace I started this series, unintentionally. I was feeling overwhelmed about realizing the connection between climate change and impulse shopping. In an attempt to numb my angst I turned my attention to a stash of digital clippings and textures I’d been collecting. I dropped a few into photoshop and starting fiddling away, trying to lose myself in an episode of golden girls. What started as subconscious layering of plastic and pollutant textures over natural ones became intentional collaging. I wound up with visual contortions that leave the viewer unable to pinpoint the organic materials from the manufactured.
THE HYPNOTIC DOUBLE-SPEAK OF HYPER-CONSUMERISM
I'm creating an unsafe space, a nauseating experience reflective of the barrage of messaging we all receive constantly. This is an attempt to relieve some of my directionless anger and the knot of worry in the pit of my belly about how much hotter every summer is but thank god I'm a prime subscriber. Unable to grab and shake everyone i see, to scream and cry out to them about watching and participating in a disaster unfold all around us. I turn to this outlet and find myself stifled, moving through most days generally aloof and morose.
